The RISCOM Model has emerged as a result of efforts in the area of nuclear waste management to make decision processes for e.g. the selection of sites for final disposal transparent - the RISCOM II project was a major milestone.
Now, our overall approach for enhancing democracy with a structured approach to transparency and accountability is becoming widely appreciated and also used in other areas. One current area of application is the introduction of the third generation (3G) of cellular phones which has caused much discussion in Sweden. Another area of application is contaminated waste landfills and sediments, where communities need empowerment to be able to make competent decisions. For the future we believe that different applications of biotechnology will an important area where our approach can give valuable contributions to societal decision-making.
